Newton Heath LYR
Founded by workers of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. Playing in the Newton Heath district of Manchester, these working-class men laid the foundation of the greatest club in the world.
Manchester United is Born
On the brink of bankruptcy, the club was saved by local businessman John Henry Davies and renamed Manchester United. A new identity, a new era — the Red Devils were coming.
Sir Matt Busby Arrives
A war-scarred Old Trafford, a bombed-out ground, and a visionary Scotsman with a plan. Matt Busby took charge and began building something that would transcend football itself.
The Busby Babes
The most exciting young team England had ever seen. Duncan Edwards, Roger Byrne, Tommy Taylor — a generation of talent that made the world fall in love with Manchester United. Two league titles. A nation's hope.
Munich
The plane carrying the Busby Babes home from a European Cup tie in Belgrade crashed on a snow-covered runway at Munich airport. Twenty-three people died. Eight players lost. The football world stood still.

European Cup — The Dream Fulfilled
Wembley. 29 May 1968. Ten years after Munich, Matt Busby's Manchester United became the first English club to win the European Cup, beating Benfica 4–1. Charlton wept. A nation wept with him.
The Wilderness Years
Busby's retirement left a void no one could fill. Relegation in 1974. Years of near-misses and false dawns. The club's greatness felt distant — but the fans never stopped believing.

The Glazer family completed a leveraged buyout of Manchester United, loading £525 million of debt directly onto the club. A debt-free institution was shackled overnight. The fans protested. The board capitulated. The rot began.
